ROUND TABLE:
NUCE X SUP 2025 FINAL SHOW
‘Round Table : encounter & co-construction’ is an exhibition that celebrates the essence of what SUP believes art is capable of; a vehicle for an international exchange of ideas, skills, and cultures, that connects university to the community through the arts – a belief that the arts are not separate from public life, but deeply embedded within it.

About ROUND TABLE:encounter and co-construction
Changhua Arts Hall, a site built in 1933 (Showa 8) by the Japanese, once symbolised Changhua's transition towards a modern city. After 1945, the National Government took over the Changhua Public Hall, renamed it "Zhongshan Hall," and it was used by the Changhua County Council as a venue for democratic initiatives. This site not only served as a concrete practice of modern performance and democratic liberation at the time but also carries rich historical memories. The land has witnessed a history of 'encounter and co-creation.' In the development of Taiwanese art history, the introduction of Western-style modern art education during the Japanese colonial period created a connection between Taiwan and the world. Notably, Japanese artist Kinichiro Ishikawa and others brought "plein air painting" and "English watercolour techniques" to Taiwan, indirectly establishing an artistic exchange between Taiwan and the United Kingdom. From today's curatorial perspective, holding this exhibition in Changhua Arts Hall—a space constructed nearly a century ago during the Japanese era—undoubtedly provides an essential historical link for this Taiwan-UK exchange exhibition.
Artist Danny Young's (Yang Yi-Sung) work employs sound, found objects, and the site itself to shape a diverse and interwoven market landscape. Artist Margarita Frančeska Loze's work (Liu Zhen-ni) gathers imagery from nature and temple totems, constructing a temple of faith and imagination rooted in both material and spiritual origins. Artist Hsieh Chih-Kang focuses on the depiction of Taiwanese textures, attempting to reveal an inner truth through realistic techniques and close-up perspectives on graffiti. Wu Kuei-Hsi presents expressive forms and colours, portraying dragon-like, non-human figures that hint at the entanglement and hybridity of global cultures. Chen Yu-Han (Austin Chen) reflects on individual memory (history) and the imagination of time through personal emotional experiences. Artists Chen Wen-Ching and Zhang Jia-xiang’s series of works focus on species and ecology in their environments, presenting a landscape where "giant artificial objects" and "artificial nature" coexist. Artists Tsai Chi-Ting, Yang Shih-Pin, and Lin Chih-Hsien approach the theme from an entertainment perspective, using symbols such as castles, horses, and rock-paper-scissors to explore the dialectical relationship between individual life experiences and real existence. Finally, Huang Lin-Lu's work, with its dynamic imagery of shifting aeroplanes, highlights the impact of industrialisation on globalisation and the tension and confrontation present in current international affairs.
Through this series of works, the exhibition captures the Generation Z experience of "hypertext" and "hyperculture" in the internet era—navigating the outcomes of "open source and sharing" through the motions of their fingertips and gaze. It embodies a new order of "globalisation and decentralisation," where artists are free to engage with local references within media contexts, construct their own identities, and initiate dialogues with the world.

SUP UK Arts and Culture Organisation
Something Useful Project (SUP) is a UK-based NGO arts and culture organisation established in 2011, dedicated to harnessing the power of visual language to promote the vital role of art in fostering cultural exchange and connecting communities.
Since its inception, SUP has actively promoted cross-cultural dialogue through international artist residency programmes and art-based initiatives, creating strong connections between artists, academic institutions, and local communities. Through collaboration and creative sharing, SUP facilitates deep cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
SUP establishes close partnerships with public and private academic institutions, as well as various arts organisations, offering artist-led workshops, activities, and projects. It tailors residency programmes or art initiatives based on the needs of its partners. SUP is committed to supporting the development of art students, professional artists, and the broader arts ecosystem, creating a platform for cross-cultural exchange and creative practice.
Over the past 11 years, SUP has successfully implemented international artist residency exchange programmes at university institutions in India. In 2025, we are honoured to bring the "SUP International Residency Programme" to Taiwan for the first time, in collaboration with National Changhua University of Education (NCUE), jointly promoting cross-cultural exchange and artistic creation.
About NCUE x SUP 2025 International Artist Residency Programme
The beginning of the Taiwan residency programme stems from a warm personal connection. A student of Professor Wang Li-yan from National Changhua University of Education happens to be the cousin of Samantha Y. Huang, Co-Director of SUP Taiwan, which sparked the initial communication between both parties. Through close collaboration throughout 2024, a partnership was gradually established, laying the foundation for this residency programme. During this time, Samantha Y. Huang led the SUP Taiwan team in working together with Professor Wang Li-yan from the Department of Fine Arts at National Changhua University of Education to develop a unique programme aimed at supporting the needs, aspirations, and growth of both the university’s students and the wider arts community.
Margarita Frančeska Loze (Liu Zhen-ni) and Danny Young (Yang Yi-Sung) stood out from numerous applicants in the UK. Their works, skills, and creative approaches have been nurtured by top British art institutions and further refined through continuous effort and outstanding achievements after graduation. They represent the core spirit of British art, and SUP is committed to selecting the most outstanding artists who embody the SUP ethos for its residency programmes.
Through close collaboration with the faculty and students of National Changhua University of Education, this residency programme focuses on artistic creation, workshop teaching, and interaction between students and the community. The artists hold regular weekly meetings with the SUP team, open their studios, and allow their artistic language to naturally respond to the new environment.
The works exhibited reflect the exchange of ideas and interactions that took place at National Changhua University of Education, in Changhua, and other regions of Taiwan. From Danny’s exploration of Taiwanese ceramic language and understanding of cultural phenomena, to Margarita’s study of Taiwanese temples and cultural contexts, extending to research on natural root systems and socially symbolic root systems, the exhibition fully demonstrates the rich outcomes of this deep cultural exchange in Taiwan.

NCUE x SUP 2025
