Interweaving and Co-Creation: Diverse pathways of Arts Education InternationalConference

Background to the Conference

Within the field of contemporary arts education, teaching, creative practice, and research no longer follow a single, linear trajectory. Instead, they unfold as a dynamic network of multiple pathways—intersecting, intertwining, and diverging over time. Curriculum design within classrooms, collaborative projects between rural schools and local communities, educational programmes led by museums and cultural institutions, art interventions integrated with counselling, healthcare, and public health, as well as cross-disciplinary experiments connecting technology, design, and digital humanities, can all be understood as integral components of the DNA of arts education.

Arts education is continually written, rewritten, and reconnected across diverse contexts, shaping developmental trajectories in which multiple communities and generations are mutually entangled and responsive to one another.

Interweaving and Co-Creation: Diverse pathways of Arts Education International
International Conference

Building upon the Arts Education Forums and Conferences continuously organised by the MA Programme in Arts Education at the Department of Fine Arts, National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) since 2021, the Interweaving and Co-constructing: Diverse pathways of Arts Education International Conference will be further expanded in 2026 to foster cross-institutional, cross-disciplinary, and international collaboration. The conference is jointly organised by the MA Programme in Arts Education, Department of Fine Arts, National Changhua University of Education, and the BA Programme in Digital Humanities and Cultural & Creative Industries together with the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies at National Chung Hsing University. It is supported by collaborative partners including the InSEA Asian Regional Committee, the UK-based Something Useful Project (SUP), and relevant professional associations and NGOs.

This conference aims to establish a platform for dialogue between domestic and international scholars and practitioners in arts education, exploring the directions and practices of arts education within diverse contemporary social contexts. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and the sharing of research outcomes, the conference seeks to deepen educators’ understanding of key issues such as multiculturalism, place-based practice, interdisciplinary integration, and art as social action. In addition, the conference provides master’s and doctoral students in arts education and related fields with opportunities to present and exchange research and practice, with the aim of fostering critical engagement and enhancing academic literacy and research capacity.

Taking interweaving and trajectories as its core conceptual metaphors, the conference examines how schools and communities, education and professional practice, and art and other disciplinary fields intersect and evolve across time and space—forming arts education genealogies that can be read, discussed, and re-imagined.

Starting from Taiwan, the conference brings together educators, researchers, artists, community practitioners, and cross-disciplinary professionals from across Asia and the wider global context to share pedagogical practices, research findings, community-based projects, and collaborative initiatives. The conference also responds to the core values of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those relating to quality education, equity, and partnerships. In the face of rapidly changing social and technological conditions, the conference seeks to collectively re-construct the “genome” of arts education and co-create diverse trajectories oriented towards the future.

Core Vision

The Arts Education Forum at National Changhua University of Education is guided by the principles of “Connect, Nurture, Respond Locally.” Organised by the Master’s Programme in Arts Education, the conference injects professional momentum and international perspectives into local arts education through sharing sessions, discussions, and workshops. It also serves as a sustained platform connecting students, teachers, and international art educators for professional exchange.

Key Features

The forum is distinguished not only by its invitation of domestic and international arts education experts but also by its local focus and sustainable planning. Each year, it integrates current issues from Taiwanese educational contexts, creating a dialogue between international perspectives and local realities.

Additionally, the forum provides Master’s students with practical training through preparation and implementation, cultivating skills in curating, project management, and international collaboration. This approach develops a new generation of educators who combine research expertise, teaching competence, and cross-cultural communication abilities.Additionally, the forum provides Master’s students with practical training through preparation and implementation, cultivating skills in curating, project management, and international collaboration. Art Education Conferences 2021–2025: Trajectories of Growth and Practice-Based Outcomes

Between 2021 and 2025, the MA Programme in Art Education at National Changhua University of Education has developed a systematically planned series of Art Education Conferences. Beginning with in-house postgraduate research presentations and fully online conferences, the initiative has gradually evolved into a recognised academic platform incorporating open calls for papers and peer-review mechanisms. Over time, it has further expanded to include international participation and open-access publication models.

The design of conference themes and their modes of implementation have not only responded closely to the University’s teaching and research contexts, but have also contributed to the cultivation of a cohort of emerging researchers equipped with strong organisational capacity, a critical engagement with educational practice, and an interdisciplinary outlook. These accumulated experiences and outcomes in researcher development form a crucial foundation and source of momentum for the proposing team in the planning and delivery of subsequent projects.

2025|2025 Art Education Conference: New Horizons in Art Education · Interdisciplinary Integration

The 2025 Art Education Conference: New Horizons in Art Education · Interdisciplinary Integration was organised in collaboration with the UK-based Something Useful Project (SUP). The conference focused on the sharing and critical reflection of outcomes from the NCUE x SUP 2025 Artist-in-Residence Programme. Through online lectures and live exchanges with art education practitioners based in the United States, the conference explored forward-looking topics such as the application of artificial intelligence in art education. The event also incorporated postgraduate research paper presentations and the compilation of a conference handbook. The overall quality of the conference has consistently received strong recognition and positive feedback from participating scholars and audiences.

2024|Art Education Conference: Multiple Perspectives and Postgraduate Research Development

The 2024 Art Education Conference: New Blueprints from Multiple Perspectives was organised with a structure that included pre-conference lectures and workshops to establish the thematic framework, followed by keynote talks and academic paper presentations on the main conference day. Presenters included postgraduate students from the Department of Fine Arts (including the Studio Practice stream). Several professors teaching in the United States expressed high praise for the quality of the students’ research papers, demonstrating that the conference has become an important platform for nurturing emerging researchers and supporting reflective engagement with creative practice—a pattern consistently observed in previous years.

2023|International Conference and Proceedings: Expanding Interdisciplinary and Global Impact

The Art × Education: Interdisciplinary Connections and Social Practice International Conference was organised to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Department of Fine Arts at National Changhua University of Education. Scholars and practitioners from South Korea, Germany, the United States, and Taiwan were invited to present and respond to papers, while an open call for submissions further expanded international and interdisciplinary dialogue. The conference was co-organised in collaboration with the Taiwan Association for Cultural Policy Studies and Da-Mei International Cultural and Creative Co., Ltd.
Following the conference, peer-reviewed proceedings were compiled and assigned an ISBN. In 2024, the publication was made openly accessible through digital release, reinforcing principles of knowledge sharing and supporting the long-term preservation and circulation of academic outputs.

2022|Visual Art Education Conference: Establishing an Open Call and Review Mechanism

The 2022 Visual Art Education Conference marked the first implementation of an open call for papers alongside an abstract review process, ensuring academic rigour and thematic diversity. A formal conference handbook was produced, systematically presenting the programme, abstracts, and presenter information, contributing to the gradual establishment of the conference’s professional standards and recognisable identity.

2021|Visual Art Conference: The Starting Point of Online Academic Exchange

The 2021 Visual Art Conference featured postgraduate research paper presentations alongside invited keynote lectures and was conducted entirely online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This format ensured continuity of academic exchange during a period of disruption while enabling the organising team to accumulate practical experience in online conferencing and remote interaction. These experiences laid an important foundation for subsequent international participation and hybrid-format events.
