About the programme

The SUP International Artist Residency Programme is an immersive and highly collaborative initiative that provides a unique platform for global creative exchange. Through an annual open call, selected artists are invited to participate in this paid residency, where they have the opportunity to develop their artistic practices in Taiwan while engaging with the local community.

SUP works closely with NCUE and the resident artists to co-design and deliver the residency, ensuring its relevance and practicality for both the artists and the university’s students and faculty. Prior to the artists’ arrival, the SUP team offers comprehensive pre-residency support, ensuring that the artists are well-informed, well-equipped, and fully prepared for their experience in Taiwan.

This collaborative approach fosters a mutually enriching environment, supporting creative growth, cultural exchange, and the development of lasting international networks.

Artist-led Workshops, Talks and Events

Workshops are a core component of the residency programme. Resident artists are required to deliver two workshops per week for students at the hosting university. Prior to the artists’ arrival, the SUP team collaborates with each artist to design an initial workshop plan based on their individual practice, which is then discussed and refined in consultation with NCUE to ensure practicality and alignment with the curriculum. During the residency, regular meetings between SUP, NCUE, and the artists are held to review feedback and make necessary adjustments to the workshops, ensuring both teaching quality and positive learning outcomes for students. In addition to workshops, each artist is required to deliver two artist talks, sharing their creative journeys, research directions, and residency experiences. Artists are also encouraged to propose and host additional activities that contribute to enriching the academic and artistic environment for students and faculty alike.

Field Trips with Students

Invited and arranged by NCUE, the resident artists have multiple opportunities to join students and faculty on field trips as part of the university’s curriculum. These trips include visits to major museums in Taiwan, galleries, and artist studios. It offers a wonderful opportunity for the artists to engage with students, exchange perspectives, and have meaningful conversations about art, culture, and creativity.

Local Arts and Education Community Exchange

Responding to the resident artists' creative practices, SUP carefully seeks out interesting opportunities for exchange within the community. The artists have the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the local culture while sharing their perspectives and artistic practices, fostering genuine dialogue and cultural exchange on campus and off campus.

Additionally, the SUP Taiwan team works closely with NCUE to identify suitable exchange activities and organise them through their university's network and support.

These activities include visits to local elementary schools, visiting artist studios, art museums and galleries, and meeting with local and regional arts organisations, allowing the artists to connect with the broader arts and education community in Changhua and other cities in Taiwan.

Culture Exploration

Cultural exploration is a key component of the artist residency and cultural exchange programme. Artists are encouraged and supported by the SUP Team to engage deeply with local cultural activities that resonate with their personal interests and artistic practices. From Margarita’s exploration of traditional tea ceremonies to Danny’s fascination with the dragon and tiger imagery found in temples, these experiences become an important source of inspiration for their creative research and work.Through these cultural encounters, the residency fosters a meaningful connection between artistic practice and the rich heritage of the local community.
