NOFORMULA

NOFORMULA originated in mid-2024.

As students within a fine art context, we have continuously received knowledge about art throughout our studies, from art history and technical skills to conceptual approaches and exhibition-making. However, as this knowledge accumulates, we have also come to recognise that art cannot be fully transmitted as a fixed system. Particularly within the context of contemporary art, many essential forms of understanding and experience cannot be directly taught, but must instead be developed through practice.

As a medium of expression, art is inherently open and fluid. Within contemporary art, there remain many undefined possibilities, which in turn become a driving force for ongoing exploration. Artistic practice no longer follows predetermined methods or standards, but moves towards a condition that is closer to having no fixed formula.

Based on this understanding, NOFORMULA seeks to create an environment that supports both openness and inclusivity, a space where practitioners can learn through exchange and practice. Reflecting the idea of “no formula”, the platform does not impose predefined themes, materials, formats, or categories. Instead, it encourages participants to begin from their own perspectives, developing individual artistic languages and methods through process and experimentation.

In practice, NOFORMULA places particular emphasis on exhibition formats that are less accessible within institutional learning environments. It seeks to translate ideas that are introduced in the classroom — but rarely realised — into concrete action.

For example, NOFORMU2A: OUTDOOR emerged in response to the limitations of campus resources and spatial conditions, which often make it difficult to engage directly with areas such as public art, land art, or outdoor exhibitions. By situating the exhibition outdoors, the project created an opportunity for participants to work with environmental conditions, scale, and unpredictability as integral parts of their practice. Through this process, participants develop practical experience, while also building a shared culture through collaboration and exchange.

In contrast to art groups formed around fixed membership, NOFORMULA operates through a more open and fluid structure. Each exhibition begins with a new open call, and participating artists change accordingly. Rather than relying on continuity of membership, this model actively invites new participants from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Through this ongoing process of renewal, the platform remains open, adaptive, and continuously evolving.
